Laya Yoga is a Saivite (Siva based) technique of fairly standard dhyana (meditation). "Laya" means "to dissolve" and focuses on dissolving or melting away the material qualities (the three gunas) that keep the atman (Self) bound to material existence and consciousness.
The Three Gunas:
- Sattva Guna: Goodness, purity, balance, intelligence.
- Raja Guna: Passion, activity, energy.
- Tama Guna: Ignorance, delusion, darkness
Laya Yoga, like other forms, does this by intentional manipulation of kundalini (the inner spiritual energies). Through Laya Yoga one is freed from unwanted material impulses (negative and positive) thus allowing one to elevate consciousness.
